John Cobb became the first man to exceed 350mph in his Railton Special in 1938. The record was retaken by George Eyston’s Thunderbolt the following day. The following year Cobb took the Railton Special to 369.7mph a record that was to stand until 1947 when his rebuilt car, now named the Railton Mobil Special achieved 394.2mph at Bonneville Salt Flats.
This record was to stand for almost 17 years and it was the last Land Speed Record set by an internal combustion piston engined car. John Ketchell depicts this event in 1947 in this fabulous painting.
