Studio BILBEY

Ian Bilbey is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. Passionate about cars from an early age, Bilbey has owned a multitude of classic cars, from Porsches to Jaguars, vintage racing cars to traditional British sports cars. He is a competing member of the Vintage Sports Car Club.

His current collection of artworks includes pigment prints, screen-prints, and mixed media paintings. Screen-printing is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink - or in Studio Bilbey's case paint - onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures , and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the paint to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. Each colour a separate printing.

Those that are termed 'unique' may have one element that is a straight forward layer of screen-printing, but they consist mainly of hand made marks.

Pigment or Giclée prints ( the French word for 'spray' ) refers to the ink jet printing process used to produce archival standard fine art prints.

Bilbey's illustrative graphic artwork is all hand drawn - including all the lettering and sponsors logo's, after extensive research into each cars race history and the graphics it carried.

Bilbey's clients include: The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Vogue, Honda, Jaguar, Volkswagen, Penguin Books, London Transport, The Daily Telegraph,Vodafone, The BBC, Royal Mail, British Airways, Terence Conran, Paul Smith, Issey Miyake, David Bailey and Eric Clapton.
